WHIRLWIND HEAT & LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION - HOW DO YOU DO?
How Do You Do? / In My Dreams
BRILLE RECORDS
Whilst straddling a fine line between moments of genuine inspiration and lazy underachievement, Whirlwind Heat are a band who certainly aren't content to sit on their laurels. Following the release of two albums and a string of singles in 2006, HOW DO YOU DO? finds the band teaming up with ex Test Icicle Devonte Hynes on a blistering new single.
HOW DO YOU DO? finds Whirlwind Heat finally making good on all that early potential, unleashing a single that sounds essential, energised and brilliant. A slice of skewed alt-rock excellence, this is Whirlwind Heat taking all the best parts of Sonic Youth, Pavement and Guided By Voices and spewing it back out in an explosion of skronky guitar genius and sun drenched melodicism. The psychedelically tinged IN MY DREAMS proves it was no fluke either, another brilliant and twisted slab of alt-rock that comes across like TV On The Radio fused with The Beach Boys; excellent stuff.
HOW DO YOU DO? finds Whirlwind Heat delivering the music they've been threatening to unleash for years; essential and brilliantly skewed, lets hope that this collaboration with Devonte Hynes proves a long-term plan.
BIOGRAPHY
Whatever happened to Test Icicles? Perhaps it was the shock of touring with Whirlwind Heat, undoubtedly one of the worlds best live experiences that finally sent them over the edge. But every cloud has a silver lining they say and perhaps it could be this unholy union of The Heat, and ex-icicle Devonte Hynes. Shortly after the end of that tour, Dev, a long time admirer of Whirlwind Heat, journeyed to their Grand Rapids Michigan hideaway, basketball and guitar in. The result was a collection of songs that are wistful, almost yearning, yet still managing to maintain Whirlwind Heats heavier more insistent edge. And with guitars, and melody. A new experience for the Moog and Bass Heat.
Fresh from releasing their third album TYPES OF WOOD and having ripped it up supporting Test Icicles on their final tour, the 3 headband wearing, baseball bat swingin boys from Michigan are set to release the AIR MIAMI EP. Having released two previous albums that saw the band creatively one step ahead of the game TYPES OF WOOD captures the band at yet another point of their unbridled creativity. It's sound is variegated and distinct. All this with just Bass, Drums, and Moog.
Whirlwind Heat are three kids from Michigan who happened to catch the eye of Jack White four years ago. The band were preposterously ahead of their game when they released the frenetic thrash punk-funk album DO RABBITS WONDER in 2003, not to mention the 10 songs in 10 minutes mini-epic FLAMINGO HONEY a year later. REAGAN EP is four tracks of irrepressibly jerky, joyful indie industrial funk the REAGAN EP sounds like Lou Reed fronting the Pop Group, effortlessly fusing the sound of New Cross 2006 with New York 1981.
