SOUTHERN FRIED RECORDS
A dance compilation that’s perhaps better suited to the dancefloor than the home, SOUTHERN FRIED & TESTED collects together two separate mixes from The Mighty Dub Katz and Caged Baby respectively.
The Mighty Dub Katz half of proceedings relies a little too heavily on the cheesier side of the dancefloor, bringing together the likes of Space Cowboy, Armand Van Helden and the Katz themselves for a mix that feels like a who’s who of well trodden dance anthems. Songs such as the Elton John ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE REMIX and Space Cowboy’s ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE are maybe tried and tested floor fillers, but hardly make for the freshest sounding choices these days. It’s left to the odd moment like Percy Filth’s SHOW ME YOUR MONKEY and Kurtis Mantronix’s 77 STRINGS to provide much in the way of real interest here; though this proves ultimately to be a touch too little too late to really help matters along.
Delivering a healthier sounding set, the Caged Baby mixed half is a more varied and intriguing proposition. Here the likes of The Black Ghosts, Bucci Bag and Glasgow Gangster Funk are dropped into the mix, this more twisted and electrofied angle giving the mix a fresher sounding feel. The Black Ghost’s FACE is a suitably inspired starting point whilst Touché keep things interesting with the bass heavy electro funk of CALLING MY NAME and Glasgow Gangster Funk’s CUTEY PIE brings a twisted disco feel to the party. Still not without its helping of cheese however, Armand Van Helden’s MYMYMY provides a lowpoint and the Mighty Dub Katz MAGIC CARPET RIDE is hardly helped by a weak remix effort.
Something of a mixed bag, SOUTHERN FRIED & TESTED is not the most essential sounding of dance mixes out there, its misses unfortunately just outnumbering its hits. Still, with the odd moment of inspired electro funk and the Caged Baby set in particular providing its fair share of thrills and spills, this is one that at least throws in enough spice to make it worth a listen.
BIOGRAPHY
Southern Fried celebrate a centenary of releases with a label compilation mixed by Mighty Dub Katz (aka Norman Cook) and Cagedbaby.
Southern Fried's first ever label compilation Fried and Tested is set for release on the 30th April 2007. A celebration of over 100 releases, Fried And Tested is mixed by label boss Norman Cook in his Mighty Dub Katz guise and Tom Cagedbaby. It's a special double CD affair, overflowing with releases past and present. Mighty Dub Katz takes care of the label's hits and the big moments, while Cagedbaby goes slightly bananas and jams 28 tracks into a mastermix that has to be heard to be believed.
100 releases is a great achievement for any independent label. Southern Fried have never done things the easy way but have released music, supported artists and found success on their own terms. Records from Armand Van Helden, Scanty Sandwich, Kurtis Mantronix, Space Cowboy, Cagedbaby, Black Ghosts, Trabant and Grandadbob, to name just a few, have made Southern Fried one of the most original and unique dance labels around. They even helped propel Elton John to number one with a record he recorded in the 1970s! They have plenty more music up their sleeve and juice left in the tank!
Joining the party, Southern Fried are also going to re-release the classic and much in demand Mighty Dub Katz single 'Magic Carpet Ride' with new mixes by Norman Cook and man-of the-moment Claude Von Stroke.
Norman Cook comments: "It was only listening back over 100 releases and 15 years that I remembered how many rules we broke. Tee hee. Here's to a continuing babble of acid house party tunes that turn us on"
Tom Cagedbaby comments: "Fried and Tested, I was blessed with the opportunity to flash fry the styles of Southern Fried, one of the most diverse and dedicated labels around. Combo'd up into a mix that should stand the test of time! May I suggest the house special to aid digestion?"
