WALL OF SOUND
Throwing together a bunch of the rising stars of the indie disco scene,
SHOCKROCK is a compilation album from Wall Of Sound that illuminates those acts that straddle that tricky line between the dancefloor and the moshpit. A noisy collision between The Gang Of Four, Smashing Pumpkins, The Human League and PiL - they make a groove heavy racket that takes in synth pop, messy guitars, ass shaking bass rumbles and melodic vocals. Like Kasabian reimagined as post-punk terrorists, SHOCKROCK is full of bands who make music to slay dancefloors and start riots.
Openers Metrononomy kick things off with YOU COULD EASILY HAVE ME, a song that throbs with the kind of sleazy vibrancy you expect of your pop stars - a record rammed to the gills with dirty, infectious grooves and rabid attitude. SISTER SELF DOUBT (ALTERNATIVE VERSION) from Shakes is a guaranteed dancefloor filler, primed with C4 detonations of wired p-funk jerkiness and electro synth pop sleaze. Slinky, wired and ready to transform you into a rubbery sweaty mess by the time its infectious grooves get under your skin. The Sunshine Underground's I AIN'T LOSING ANY SLEEP (SERGE SANTIAGO'S VOCAL EDIT), meanwhile is a chaotic four and a half minutes of bass driven fury; the guitars crash and distort whilst a cold synth line gives the whole thing that cool electro sheen, those 80s synth pop influences given a good kicking and dragged screaming into the present day. Thrilling, angry and exciting this is the kind of kick in the teeth you need every once in a while; a vital and exhilarating ride.
The frantic pop thrills keep on coming thick and fast, songs like The Gossip's stupendous STANDING IN THE WAY OF CONTROL and LETS MAKE LOVE AND LISTEN TO DEATH FROM ABOVE by CSS winning you ever by sheer force.
Playing jerky punk that fits somewhere between the Gang Of Four and Acid House, London five piece Infadels do the whole punk-funk thing expertly, running the gamut from punk rock attitude to full on acid house revival - smiley faces and all, this is like having baggy's forgotten heroes Flowered Up back, although with a punk-funk sinew replacing those baggy beats. Eschewing their usual jerky punk, latest single GIRL THAT SPEAKS NO WORDS (NIGHTMOVES REMIX SINGLE EDIT) comes on like a more subdued version of Kasabian here, Infadels deliver perhaps their most assessable and heartfelt moment yet, swooning synth swells and laid back beats run under the infectious melodies; the whole thing resting on an impossibly catchy chorus thats more than likely to see them prick up a few fresh new ears. The latest band to blend sharp synth riffs with frenetic drum patterns, p-funk guitar stabs and huge pop choruses, New York duo Shy Child sound like a more urgent and hungry version of The Bravery, DOWN ON YOURSELF throbs away like the dancefloor-owning monster-tune its destined to become; the sound of Soft Cell abusing Duran Duran at a sleazy electro strip club.
A vibrant, vital and thrilling album; SHOCKROCK is the sound of a bunch of bands not just taking over the indie disco, but burning it down and reclaiming it as their very own. An essential and ass kicking experience, you need this in your life.
BIOGRAPHY
Guitar bands are using synths more than ever, dance music is played live, electronic beats writhe under live bass whilst drums and woodblocks and cowbells tussle with samplers - the twin worlds of indie and dance are locked in a sweaty mess under the glare of a thousand glowsticks and it sounds amazing. To celebrate this musical revolution Wall Of Sound are excited to announce the release of SHOCKROCK, their revolutionary compilation album featuring fifteen pioneers of this new wave of groups, utterly disparate and yet united in their disdain for the traditional band template. Featuring CSS, Infadels, Shy Child, Soulwax, Friendly Fires and Sunshine Underground and many others.
