Bringing together seven bands dealing in uncompromising metal, a brutal barrage of syncopated riffs, double time drum beats, shredding guitar solos and growling vocals, UNDERGROOVE VS. HANGMANS JOKE RECORDINGS offers a collection of music about as punishing, loud and intense as you'd perhaps expect. Certainly not for the faint hearted, this is a coming together of bands that feels like an endurance test of getting hit in the face with a sledgehammer, suitably apocalyptic and brutal.
With little in the way of melody or variety amidst the brutal riffing and noise, openers RSJ are all militaristic drum patterns and a barrage of downtuned distorted riffs, raging barks and growls. Not exactly the most groundbreaking of metal bands, RSJ are preaching solely to the converted here with DEADBOLT. The similarly brutal sounding The Abominable Iron Sloth weigh in with HATS MADE OF VEAL AND THAT NEW CAR SCENT, a lesson in ultra heavy sludge rock that makes Fu Manchu sound like Westlife.
Elsewhere Malefice don't exactly deviate from proceedings with the brutalistic SEVEN whilst South Wales outfit Johnny Mental unleash GRANT ME REVENGE, yet another cavalcade of ultra heavy guitars, double speed drum patterns and vocals from the bowels of hell.
Coming as something of a melodic shock, New York's Trashlight Vision offer up ALLERGIC TO YOU, a slice of snotty old school punk that bridges the gap between Motley Crue and The New York Dolls whilst Exit By Name deliver some by the numbers screamo action with BEFORE THERE IS GLITTER THERE IS BLOOD, cliched and over familiar but satisfying all the same. The scuzz rock of A MEETING WITH FOUL PLAY from G.U. Medicine offers some good old fashioned rock n roll thrills, all dirty guitar riffs, powerhouse drumming and Elvis meets Johnny Rotten vocal barks and screams.
Perhaps not the freshest or most innovative sounding of compilations, UNDERGROOVE VS. HANGMANS JOKE RECORDINGS nevertheless throws up a bunch of bands dishing out uncompromising metal and balls to the wall punk rock that demands your attention at the least.
