HARMLESS RECORDS
Proving that there's a whole lot more to surf film soundtracks than the by now cliché ridden twang of Dick Dale and The Beach Boys, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD: SURF SOUNDTRACKS '64-'74 brings together the psychedelic likes of underground heroes Farm, Music Convention, Tamun Shud and G. Wayne Thomas. Lifted from cult movies such as Crystal Voyager and Children Of The Sun, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD is an inspired and inspirational collection of psych rock boogie.
Soundtracking INNERMOST LIMITS OF PURE FUN, Farm contribute five cuts here, songs like the epic psychedelic rock of GROUND SHUFFLE, the far out spaced out stoner folk of COMING OF DAWN; essentially Fairport Convention jamming with Jimi Hendrix on acid at Woodstock and the twangtastic CRUMPLE CAR are long forgotten classics that immediately urge you to investigate further. Taken from cult classic CRYSTAL VOYAGER, G. Wayne Thomas is treading similar sonic territory to Farm, though perhaps with a touch more rootsy rock to his sound; think The Rolling Stones by way of Steppenwolf, Ted Nugent and The Byrds. The anthemic HOLLYWOOD is an acid drenched call to arms whilst the epic thirteen minute plus CHANGE is a Hammond organ led space jam that rivals early Pink Floyd in the spacey psychedelia stakes.
Music Convention contribute the pretty acoustic instrumental SITAR TRACK and the rock boogie of BELLYBOARD BEAT, both from CHILDREN OF THE SUN whilst The Protein Brothers DRAINPIPE is a trippy affair that imagines a folkier take on The Doors. Smoghorn's TRANSPARENT DREAM and ANIMAL KINGDOM are more traditional rock affairs, taking their cues from The Byrds and the Stones, while DREAM CHANT from Ticket is a curious cross between Jefferson Airplane and early Elton John.
An inspired and inspirational collection of forgotten psych rock classics, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD: SURF SOUNDTRACKS '64-'74 is a near essential additional to your record collection.
BIOGRAPHY
Are you prepared for the beautiful, unparalleled aural ride that is Chairman Of The Board, Surf Soundtracks?
Never mind the Beach Boys, Dick Dale or the sand stomping legends of the surf guitar. Chairman Of The Board brings together alternative, underground sounds culled from infamous surf soundtracks all but lost to the genre that created them.
Boasting tracks from some of the most iconic surf films from the 1960’s and 70’s, Surf Soundtracks includes many of the ‘golden era’ surfing moments from Crystal Voyager, The Endless Summer, Innermost Limits Of Pure Fun, Morning Of The Earth, Evolution & Super Session.
From 60s beat to funky stoner rock, blues and folk, a psychedelic pulse breathed energy into giant screen sized ‘tube rides' the directors had captured on film and as a consequence surfers had a soundtrack that beautifully reflected the barefoot roots of their lifestyle.
Over 30 years have passed since this golden era and many of these soundtracks have been lost to the mists of time until now.
Compiled by Rowan Chernin, a founding editor of Loaded, he was the magazine’s Music and Clubs Editor during the hedonistic days of 90’s Brit Pop and superclub culture. Chairman Of The Board brings these gems to the surface once more.
