Returning to the music scene after a lengthy hiatus, electronic pioneers Underworld are back with their new album, OBLIVION WITH BELLS.
Not exactly changing their formula that's served them so well over the last few decades, OBLIVION WITH BELLS sees the reformed dance duo returning with another twisty, turny, dense and epic sounding collage of sound; a collection of cascading electronica that hits you just as much intellectually as it does psychically.  The nine minute plus opener, CROCODILE is a healthy indication that the years away haven't dampened their ability to create absorbing music.  Karl Hyde's impenetrable cut and paste vocals slip and slide over grooving bass rumbles and driving beats, cascading synth washes and quasi religious chanting adding to the atmosphere.  With RING ROAD, Hyde spouts observational lyrical couplets on modern English life, as barbed, loaded and honest as anything The Arctic Monkeys have ever uttered.
GLAM BUCKET is a cascading spiral of sounds and atmosphere, Underworld unleashing a wash of sonic glitter; a sound more upbeat and feel good than they're usually associated with, whilst on the driving BEAUTIFUL BURNOUT the duo deliver dubby bass rumbles and careering beats, the discordant wail of an accordion providing the unexpected hook line.
OBLIVION WITH BELLS is a record that whilst a deeply satisfying and solid return from Underworld, also feels like a side-step rather than anything revolutionary or particularly new, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith delivering a musical experience that's firmly stuck in neutral.  There's nothing here that feels particularly fresh or inspired, Underworld instead opting to retread previous ground; this a record close musically to their DUBNOBASSWITHMYHEAD opus.
HOLDING THE MOTH finds Karl Hyde drowsily spouting stream of consciousness lyrical observations against steady beats and ambient washes of sound whilst BOY, BOY, BOY is an almost trip hop take on the Human League or Heaven 17, electro pop with darker, more subdued leanings.  CUDDLE BUNNY VS CELTIC VILLAGES delves into the more avant garde and surreal, traces of the Aphex Twin menacing Harold Budd in the twisted ambient atmospherics whilst on FAXED INVITATION, the duo either pay deep homage to or totally rip off the robotic techno of Kraftwerk depending on your particular point of view.  The shimmering piano led GOOD MORNING COCKEREL imagines a more experimental and avant garde take on Coldplay, whilst closing number, the epic BEST MAMGU EVER plays to Underworld's strengths; a deeply atmospheric and mesmerising journey into burrowing electronica that ends things on a suitably enigmatic and compelling climax.
A good solid comeback from Underworld. whilst OBLIVION WITH BELLS may not be groundbreaking stuff, this is the duo back on compelling and intoxicating form.  Underworld may not be revolutionising the genre here, but as a satisfying return to the genre they practically invented, this is very welcome stuff.

BIOGRAPHY
