Proof of the power good songs and a mesmerising voice can have, New York based singer/songwriter Turner Cody is someone blessed with a grace and majesty that is understated yet beguiling.
With his new album, QUARTER CENTURY, Turner Cody proves himself an artist with the songs and range to go all the way, a collection of songs that establish him as a major new talent. Opener SUZZANNAH is a rough and ready acoustic ballad that centres around an enticing chorus and heartfelt melodicism; the middle ground between early Beck, Willy Mason and Damien Rice. MY LADY WENT AWAY is another battered acoustic affair, Cody touching on country, blues and jazz to heartfelt and touching effect.
The tender I'LL BE HOME continues this trend, Cody's heart on his sleeve vocal croon gliding gently over country guitar strums and the ramshackle brush of drums. Title track, QUARTER CENTURY feels like a long lost Robert Johnson classic, lo-fi production techniques lending the song that sepia toned old world feel.
There's a feeling that Turner Cody is the definite real deal throughout QUARTER CENTURY, this a singer/songwriter who can wring emotional density out of the most subtle of nuances, every word sung displaying the soul of a true acoustic troubadour. The folk induced fingerpicking of FOREVER, FOREVER display traces of Bob Dylan or Ray Harper; whilst THE GREAT MIGRATION and THE STEEL DRUM are gentle strum alongs that imagine Turner Cody sitting beside some blazing campfire in the old West.
The only criticism that QUARTER CENTURY ever really evokes is a sense of variety and length, the songs here hardly wildly different in their tone and performance; by the time you reach the records later moments, you may well feel as if you've heard just about everything Cody has to offer musically.
Still, as the perfect late night listening, QUARTER CENTURY makes better sense, Turner Cody a master of the more subdued side of acoustic balladeering; his songs exhibiting a certain timeless quality that reward repeated listening.
Proof of the power good songs and a mesmerising voice can have; Turner Cody manages to impress greatly here with QUARTER CENTURY. A singer-songwriter with grace and majesty - understated, intense and beguiling, this is an album to cherish.
