Track Listing > > Girl Number One / When The Song Applies To You / Your Love Is All I Want
FLEET STREET REC / FILTHY LUCRE
Twee sounding indie pop from a singer/songwriter who instantly invites descriptions like quirky, Tim Ten Yen is someone whose songs inhabit some strange middle ground between Belle And Sebastian, The Human League and White Town.
GIRL NUMBER ONE is a catchy enough little number, Tim Ten Yen delivering ridiculously catchy melodies over sweet lo-fi pop conventions; tinny keyboard effects and simplistic drum patterns very much the order of the day here. Elsewhere the similarly lo-fi WHEN THE SONG APPLIES TO YOU repeats the same tricks and ticks, Tim Ten Yen revealing himself as some Babybird meets Mike Flowers figure whilst on YOUR LOVE IS ALL I WANT the tweeness unfortunately overcomes the charm, a song that drips in so much sugary sweetness that the effect is ultimately a little too sickening to enjoy.
A decent enough stab at likeable indie pop, GIRL NUMBER ONE finds Tim Ten Yen delivering a sound that whilst undoubtedly catchy and infectious is a little too twee and knowing to really hit the mark.
