The work of producer and composer Chris Bangs, The Shadow Orchestra are a fusion of electronica, dark techno, post-rock and gentle pop. Debut album THE SHADOW ORCHESTRA is a rich and textured experience that calls to mind artists as diverse as the Aphex Twin, Richie Hawtin, Harold Budd and Zero 7.
THE SHADOW ORCHESTRA is a record that will find its place on the more discerning dancefloors as well as holding up as a compelling and multi faceted album in its own right.
From the opening delicious dark electronica of SWEET AS A NUT and MENTALIST MANDOLINIST, Chris Bangs swiftly establishes himself as someone dealing in gloomily atmospheric dance; all subdued beats, downbeat samples and moody ambience. The pretty PLUCKING AND BOWING introduces a worldly classicism to proceedings, sublime classical instrumentation woven into the beat driven ambience. SPRING 2005 finds its melodies in a forlorn whistle, kind of Ennio Morricone done trip-hop whilst the folk driven RAIN MUSIC features Scottish singer/songwriter Amy Duncan on wistful vocals, a beautiful and intoxicating song.
THE BIGGEST ANIMAL OF THEM ALL recalls Mogwai at their most melancholic, a collage of otherworldly sounds and subdued intensity while on DARK AND SWEET, The Shadow Orchestra indulge in some wonderfully pitch black twisted electronica, throbbing basslines and techno bleeps and squelches clearly the order of the day.
Intelligent and compelling dance music that bridges the gap between Richie Hawtin, the Aphex Twin, Mogwai and Harold Budd; THE SHADOW ORCHESTRA finds Chris Bangs delivering a superbly rich, textured and complex debut album. Bringing together a similarly like minded collection of musicians here, The Shadow Orchestra is a collective capable of extraordinary and sublime things.
BIOGRAPHY
Following an inspired live performance on the new Sanctuary Stage at this Year's Big Chill, The Shadow Orchestra release their stunning eponymous debut album. Two years in the making, the album includes a collaboration with new Scottish singer-songwriter and double bassist, Amy Duncan, on the sublime RAIN MUSIC, the theme to BACKPACKER ORPHEUS, the play about the Asian Tsunami which premiered in London's West End, composed using recordings taken from a Javanese Gamelan, and a celebration of the lost art of whistling, on SPRING 2005.
An intriguing blend of found sounds, haunting melodies and crazed rhythms comprise the music of The Shadow Orchestra, AKA producer and composer, Chris Bangs. Fusing electronica, post-rock, jazz, folk and classical instrumentation, including cello, harp and glockenspiel, he bravely explores the infinite possibilities of melody, rhythm and texture.
