There's a sense when listening to The Irrepressibles that this is either absolute genius or absolute pretentious nonsense; the music as it is, a melodramatic racket that takes all the excesses of Queen, Anthony And The Johnsons and The Dresden Dolls and distils it into one neat whole.
New single MY FRIEND JO is an over the top and dramatic sounding affair, composer and songwriter Jamie McDermott wailing and howling like a cross between Freddie Mercury, Anthony Hegarty and Jarvis Cocker. Flipside KNIFE SONG is another melodramatic affair, McDermott again indulging in some excessive vocal gymnastics to make your head spin, all amidst dizzying orchestral flourishes.
Compelling and intriguing if nothing else, The Irrepressibles are an outfit that definitely stand out from the crowd with MY FRIEND JO. This may be something of an acquired taste with melodramatic vocals gymnastics and frenetic orchestral bashing, but The Irrepressibles prove their individuality and originality here on a duo of songs impossible to ignore.
BIOGRAPHY
Conceived by composer/artist Jamie McDermott, The Irrepressibles are driven by an uncompromising urgency to transcend the popular music form. The collective successfully fuse classical, early jazz and folk genres. Their performances have been requested for Tate Britain, The Hackney Empire and The Roundhouse. Here they collaborated with artists to bring about truly astonishing performances in the popular music field. Using film, real-time collaboration with painters and makeup artists, avant-garde costume, sound installation, set and dance the collective have created visions of extraordinary worlds in which to inhabit their music. They are now in the throes of opening up their music to a national audience with the release of their eagerly awaited single MY FRIEND JO.
