KITCHENWARE RECORDS When I Wake On a String Water of the Gods Sisters House of Style Modern Love Twilight The Machine Such a Scene In the Dark Her, You and I When I Sleep
Playing ultra melodic Americana tinged indie rock, Chicago four piece The Changes could well be the missing link between Big Star and Wilco. Debut long player TODAY IS TONIGHT is a collection of shimmering harmonies and glistening guitars, the spirit of The Beach Boys, the Beatles and The Postal Service running through their veins. Openers WHEN I WAKE and ON A STRING are healthy indications of where The Changes are headed musically, Darren Spitzer singing in a pristine croon over delicate guitar and keyboard arrangements built to leave you swooning in awe. SISTERS is a slightly more forgettable sounding affair, although not without its own certain charm in a low key kind of way whilst HOUSE OF STYLE finds the band making out like a delicate take on U2 jamming with The Postal Service at a garage pop convention. TWILIGHT owes as much to psychedelic rock as it does to pristine power pop, far out guitar and keyboard rushes book ending the more conventional pop of the songs heart and soul whilst the urgent sounding THE MACHINE is a swooning rush of pure pop music. SUCH A SCENE finds the band in blistering form, even adding a trace of U2 esque epic rock bluster to their sound, windswept guitar histrionics raging beneath frontman Darren Spritzer's pop fuelled melodies. The slower burning HER, YOU AND I calls forth certain Wilco references, Spritzer's vocal twang echoing Jeff Tweedy in its bittersweetness, the rest of the band building from stark lone guitarisms to a heady climax of dirty windmilling guitar chords and frantic drum crashes. An album that announces The Changes as a band worthy of your devotion, a band who along with The Hold Steady could well be on the verge of kickstarting a fresh US centric indie rock revival, TODAY IS TONIGHT is a thrilling start.
