Patiently Waiting
A Massachusetts two piece, The Art Of All are a duo making densely claustrophobic rock music; a kind of goth tinged experience that calls to mind Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine and Slint. Creating intricately tense and paranoid music, swathing everything in dense layers of noise and effects, the bands debut album MORGAN is a suitably dark and intense affair.
The moodily atmospheric instrumental opener MEET AT THE HELM is all post-rocking guitar excursions and complex drum patterns, delicate riffs giving way to huge walls of noise and swirling vortexes of sound. With ALONG OUR ARMS, vocalist Peter Aliferis croons gently whilst more darkly atmospheric guitar work creates dark chasms of sound, an effect carried over into the similarly themed THE MEDIUM, though this time round Aliferis delivering his melodies with more of an ear for the hypnotic and melodic, an anthemic chorus beating beneath the walls of noise and thunderous drum beats.
THE ONES AMONG THE REST THAT ARE is another post-rocking affair that floats along on devastating walls of noise, a song that soon gives way to the more urgent sounding SO MUCH MORE, The Art Of All taking things up a gear or two and dishing out frantic math rock power riffs; a sound that recalls the genius of Slint. The shimmering BURN THE BRIDGE is a gloriously hypnotic affair that relishes in pretty melodies that frequently divebomb into scruffy noise.
Claustrophobic at times, pretty and beautiful at others, MORGAN is a record that that leaves you clambering for more; a darkly hypnotic and intoxicating album that proves the Art Of All a band worthy of investigation.
BIOGRAPHY
The art of all is a two piece band based out of Lynn, Massachusetts. The band originally started in the summer of 2004. Within a few months after the band formation, they released their first EP, "The Uphill".
The Uphill was a three song EP recorded at Studio Metronome in Brookline, NH. At Studio Metronome, the Art of All worked with recording engineer Peter Palquin, who worked on the Pixies Live DVD and the 2004 Loco Bazooka Soundtrack. Peter Palquin prior to recording "The Uphill', introduced The Art of All to bassist Ben Davis who is featured on the EP. Studio Metronome has recorded such artist as Interpol, Oasis, Shadows fall, Kill Switch Engage and many more. Once the band released "The Uphill" EP, The Art of All continued playing shows around the New England Area.
Shortly after finishing their first demo, the band quickly went back to writing new songs. While still playing shows in and around New England, the band was getting ready to go back to the studio to record their second EP “Winters End”.
The band’s second EP “Winters End” was a five song EP recorded at Steve Austin’s Mastering and Recording in Lunenburg, MA in April of 2005. On the EP “Winters End” The Art of All worked with Recording Engineer/Musician Steve Austin, who is the lead singer/guitarist of the Band Today is The Day. Steve Austin also has recorded such bands as Lamb of God, Bane, and many more.
While recording guitar tracks in the studio, Steve Austin introduced the band to Chris Debari, who is the bassist of Today is The Day and who is featured on The Art of All’s second EP “Winters End”. The Art of All had the pleasure of working with Chris Debari and would later ask him again to be the bassist on their debut Album.
Once the completion of their second EP “Winters End”, the band was immediately signed to the independent label Lucky Penny Records. Based out of Tampa Bay, FL. the label consisted of mostly small underground bands from the Florida area. One of the bigger bands on the label at the time was the band New Season. The bassist of New Season, Josh, went to college with Ruben in Boston. Later in the summer of 2005, months after being signed to Lucky Penny records, Drive Thru Records bought out the label. The band and the label eventually parted ways.
While The Art of All was starting to write new songs for their debut album in May of 2005, the band picked up Bassist Dominick Steadman to help fill in on bass at their shows. In between playing shows and writing songs, the band got the chance to jam with Dominick and create some new ideas. Although The Art of All enjoyed working with Dominick, due to musical differences the band eventually parted ways with him in October of 2005.
During the months from October to January of 2005 the band, before going to the studio, played some of their unfinished songs off their debut album “Morgan” live at multiple different venues such as The Empress Ballroom, The Middle East, The Sad Café, TT the Bears, Harper’s Ferry, The Rack and many more. The band during this time span also played on two different Massachusetts festivals, The Stone and Steel Festival and The Emergenza Festival.
The Stone and Steel Festival was a three-day event at Club 125 in Haverhill, MA where the band played with over 25 bands. On the Emergenza Festival the band went up against over two hundred plus bands that were from the Massachusetts Area. The Emergenza Festival gave the band the opportunity to play at the Middle East Upstairs and Downstairs again. The Middle East is one of Boston’s best underground venues. The Art of All advanced to the second round before being eliminated, just in time for them to start recording their debut album.
The Art of All’s Debut Album “Morgan” is an eight song Album that was recorded at Magpie Studio in Dorchester, MA. On their Debut Album the band worked with Recording Engineer/Musician Christopher Moylan, who is the drummer from the band Words for Snow and who has recorded such bands as Converge, Freefall and many more. A few weeks prior to going to Magpie studio the band teamed up with Chris Debari from the band Today is the Day, to create bass lines for their album.
Between tracking, mixing, and recording, The Art of All spent seven months in the studio. Once the mixing was finally completed in late June, Chris Moylan referred the band to a friend of his, Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering Studios in Newton, Ma, to do the Mastering for the Album “Morgan”. Jeff Lipton and Peerless Mastering Studios have mastered albums for such artist as The Dropkick Murphy’s, The Sheila Devine, and others. After completing the mastering for their album, the band sent their final copies to Record Label/Manufacturing company Wonder Drug Records located in Boston, Ma for the duplication of their album.
On the cusp of The Art of All’s Debut release in late August of 2006, the band will get the chance to celebrate their two-year anniversary by playing a show at the Paradise Lounge in Boston, Ma. The band has already lined up more show dates around the New England Area and is planning to expand to the New York City area within the next year. The band has already begun writing new material for their new album due out in the summer of 2007.
