Six Of One / Sonny
GLAD RAG RECORDS
Whilst you've got to applaud Rob McCulloch for finally managing to steer clear of the blatant Richard Ashcroft comparisons that peppered his previous work, his decision to instead deliver an imitation of the Arctic Monkeys is somewhat less inspired.
A more in-your-face and immediate sounding Rob McCulloch, SIX OF ONE is an urgent take on indie rock; all dirty guitar chords, brisk drum stabs and insistent vocals. McCulloch sings with a more aggressive and vibrant tone to his voice, pulling himself in different directions than on previous releases. The Arctic Monkeys comparisons are a little too obvious and blatant to ignore here though, McColloch adopting the same Northern drawl as Alex Turner and mimicking the same clipped guitar riffs while he's at it.
Though still continuing to evolve and improve with every new release, SIX OF ONE does represent a bit of a misstep for Rob McCulloch, a song that suggest he needs to inject a little more of his own personality into his songwriting in the future.
BIOGRAPHY
Manchester has for a long time been a honey pot of musical talent but more recently the nearby town of Bolton has had its own success with the likes of Vernon Kay, Peter Kay and Richard Ashcroft. 19 year old singer/songwriter Rob McCulloch is set to add his name to this list of talent.
He has already acquired a loyal fanbase in his hometown and the North West of England and over the past year laid some tracks down on his debut album Thoughts Alone. This will be his first indie release and Rob has been taking advice of industry panels from In The City and also SXSW, where the CD received great praise and actually reached the final of The Juke Box Jury.
The album contains 10 tracks, which have been written over the last 18 months and most are soon to be remastered and released later this year, but for now this album is a great introduction to Robs captivating lyrics and voice. His own style is influenced by Paul Weller, The Stone Roses and Tim Burgess; all filtered into his own unique songs, sang with a passion.
Rob's songs are reflections of his character - introspective and thoughtful, yet capable of many different faces. Robs chameleon nature is underpinned by his mind, which is always watching and taking note, he is a fantastic observer of life, the people he meets and conversations he hears invariably find their way into his songs.
Rob McCulloch is a new talent definitely worth keeping an eye on.
