14TH FLOOR RECORDINGS
With a year that's seen Nerina Pallot nominated for Brit and Ivor Novello awards, not to mention Gold album status for her wonderful FIRES long player, 2007 is surely the year that the singer/songwriter finally made her mark on the mainstream.
Released ahead of her Ivor Novello nomination, latest single PEG is a cover of the Steely Dan classic and sees Nerina Pallot employing Richard X on production duties. Surely, an effort to further entrench her into mainstream acceptance, PEG is unfortunately something of a misfire; a watered down and wafer thin version of the sound that Nerina Pallot first caught the imagination with, this is the singer devoid of any of that early intensity and grace, a song that finds those elements replaced by overtly radio friendly overtures and over familiarity.
It's hard to completely dismiss Nerina Pallot here, her gorgeous croon still managing to engage amidst the slickness; PEG is ultimately though a dull misfire from a singer/songwriter capable of so much more.
BIOGRAPHY
Nerina Pallot releases her fast-rising album FIRES on April 17th through 14th Floor Records. Originally available on Pallot's own DIY label Idaho in 2005, the album made the iTunes Top 10 and led to the
Guardian tipping Pallot as, 'One of the hottest acts of 2006.'
Featured in the Records Of The Year list by The Sunday Times, FIRES continues to snowball with sales over 10,000 on little more than word of mouth.
Born in London to a half-French father and Indian-born mother, Pallot spent part of her childhood in India before settling in Jersey. In 2002, she released her debut album in the UK through a major label - an experience that taught her, "many things, but especially that it's never a good idea to make a video in which you fly." Parting company with the mainstream music business, Pallot recorded FIRES between LA and her London home before releasing the album on her own label Idaho. Produced by Howard Willing (Smashing Pumpkins), Wendy Melvoin (Prince & The Revolution) and Eric Rosse (Tori Amos), the record teams Pallot's classical musical training with her love of country, folk and rock music - with influences including Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Carole King and Rufus Wainwright. The album has all the makings of a good-old fashioned groundswell. The Telegraph wrote, "A pop-rock gem. Melodically rich and lyrically complex." The Times put simply, "A treasure" and Uncut declared FIRES, "marries fiercely intelligent songs to memorable tunes and outrageous pop hooks".
