As one of India's biggest new artists, Mukul Deora can perhaps be most easily compared to Tricky; dealing as he does in dark paranoid beats, mumbled vocals and an atmosphere of the brooding and claustrophobic.
Those Tricky comparisons ring the strongest here, Mukul employing a vocal style eerily reminiscent of the Bristol trip-hop pioneer; almost whispering in places, launching into gruff streams of consciousness the next. BIOGRAPHY
Mukul is one of India's biggest new artists - signed to SonyBMG and creating a sound that is inimitable in his home country. A pioneer in his field, this is his first release in the UK; mixing sparse hip-hop stylings, eastern-beats and hushed, whispered vocals. Dark and brooding, STRAY is a debut album laced in intent.
In his own words:
"Growing up in India in the 70s and 80s was interesting in the sense that you really had to search for your music, be able to isolate it and then pluck it out from the other. We all had black and white televisions with one state-owned channel then.
So anyway, one of the year's highlights was the Grammy awards, which were mercifully broadcast to us. And I used to sit in front of the TV with this portable cassette recorder in my hand, recording the whole ceremony by holding it up to the TV speakers. That was my first mix-tape, and I used to hear it every day..."
