Mark-Anthony Abel is another of those sensitive singer/songwriter types, banging away at a battered piano and making music that brings to mind words like nice and pleasant. Its all very Coldplay/Damien Rice/David Gray, a quartet of songs that offer up soothing melodies and laid back vibes, nothing groundbreaking or fresh - you know, just nice.
Without anything that really sets him apart from the crowd, Mark-Anthony Abel doesn't manage to hugely impress here; he's got a decent voice in a smooth, polished and very middle of the road kind of way, nice enough sounding songs - but its all just a bit average and underwhelming. Of the songs here, IN VAIN is a middling piano ballad that struggles to make too much of an impression, I MIGHT LET YOU DOWN, a laid back indie guitar tune that impresses more and MORE THAN THIS, an overwrought slice of MOR angst with a decent chorus. TAKE MY HAND finds Mark-Anthony Abel delivering another average sounding song, again, decent enough but hardly the kind of thing to leave you gaping in amazement or awe.
Mark-Anthony Abel presents himself here as a bit too average and middle of the road, these are decent songs sung by a decent sounding singer, nothing more or nothing less. Its hard to get very excited or enthused by IN VAIN, an EP that settles for nice and pleasant instead of aiming for anything more.
