Meeting somewhere between Boards Of Canada, Mogwai and DJ Shadow, Lazlo Hollyfeld are a four piece band who play atmospheric post-rock with added grooves.
On the groups latest release, THE PACER EP, Lazlo Hollyfeld skate between elevator muzak meets smooth jazz meets off centre electronica on MISS HONG, atmospheric guitar noodling by way of moody ambience on EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS GONE and beat heavy dark electro stalking on SIX MONTHS LATER, a kind of Unkle meets Aphex Twin mash-up with added guitars. Closing number BONES finds the band laying down jazzy guitar grooves against off kilter rhythms, a sound reminiscent of prime Tortoise; Lazlo Hollyfeld basking in the gorgeous laid back jazz vibes and soundtracking the perfect summers day.
Creating a euphoric and uplifting take on post-rock, Lazlo Hollyfeld perfectly meld the sounds of Tortoise and Boards of Canada into one delicious whole here; and in doing so, manage to come up with a sound all of their own. THE PACER EP is a work of depth and warmth, marking Lazlo Hollyfeld out as almost the Beach Boys of the post-rock scene.
Lazlo Hollyfeld plays music that is Cerebral and Poignant. Many have likened Lazlo Hollyfeld to artists such as Tortoise, Mogwai, DJ Shadow, Medeski Martin and Wood, and many others. But, Lazlo Hollyfeld has managed to create a purely original and new uplifting sound.
With countless live performances, 2 albums, and a 3rd on the way, the group has a solid foundation which highlights the ability to constantly explore and push themselves to new ideas through the songwriting process. The newest release from August 2005, THE PACER EP, is the most recent example of the groups merging of deep rhythmic pattern, finely tuned tone and texture, and simple and often hypnotizing melody. This is just one more block for this quartet to build upon in their desire to reach toward new ideas and sounds.
Lazlo Hollyfeld formed in the winter of 2002 in a small room in the heart of downtown Buffalo, NY. Bassist Chris Gangarossa and keyboardist Scott Molloy began it all by trying to focus on creating a purely instrumental sound based on the ideas of simplicity, improvisation, and dominant rhythms and textures. After several months of writing new original material, guitarist Jeff McLeod was added to the mix. And, drummer, Matt Felski. The result was the creation of a new original instrumental quartet rooted in the ideals of post-rock, breakbeat, ambience, and free improvisation.
Since the begining of 2003, Lazlo Hollyfeld has performed hundreds of shows, expanding its repoitoire of original music and constantly creating new sounds in the live atmosphere. This year Lazlo has shared the stage with Mogwai, The Rapture, Bonobo, DJ Logic, Arrested Development, The Slip, Project Object, John Brown's Body, Schleigho, the Twinemen, and Mecca Bodega, to name a few. The goal continues to be creating new sounds and ideas on stage as well as in the studio. With the first studio release 'Our Universe is Feeding' and the new EP, 'The Pacer EP', the band expanded it's creative outlets offering music to a wider audience. Lazlo Hollyfeld continues to push the musical boundaries of their creations while continuously generating new ideas, sounds, and experiences for anyone who takes the time to listen
