Sounding much like a more lo-fi version of the Gorillaz, Joakim flits around with the same genre hopping sense of glee on his latest album, MONSTERS & SILLY SONGS. This is a record that is never content to repeat the same trick twice, a mish mash of styles and sounds, Joakim delivering a Technicolor explosion of sounds, ideas and styles at every available opportunity.
Taken from that record, latest single LONELY HEARTS is steeped in a gonzoid pop classicism, kind of Pulp meets early Spandau Ballet at an underground eighties wine bar. Given a dark electroclash makeover by Tim Goldsworthy, LONELY HEARTS is pushed into even braver new directions.
A single that continues to showcase the scope and ambition of Joakim, a truly genre hopping artist with ideas to spare, LONELY HEARTS is yet another reason to embrace Joakim's Technicolor brilliance.
BIOGRAPHY
After an experimental phase of only a few months, his debut TIGERSUSHI was released, which 4Hero, Next Evidence, DJ Medhi and others, cited on TIGERSUSHI REMIXED, and which also became the name of the label Joakim founded in 2001. In 2003, with FANTOMES the debut successor ensues. Tracks like COME INTO MY KITCHEN and ARE YOU VEGETARIAN? become real club hits. Joakim doesn't feel that he has to adhere to dance music or any other musical style and so his new album MONSTERS & SILLY SONGS has also turned out entirely free-spirited. Things come together which do not belong together or which one did not suspect could belong together: John Carpenter and Aphex Twin, hippieness and digital culture, step programming from the eighties and modern sound design.
