CONEY ISLAND DISCS
The brainchild of London based electro popster Patrick Wright, Ichinchilla releases his debut long player ZULU LANDING through his own Coney Island Discs label.
Opener PLANET OF SOUL soon sets the tone; a clinical slice of cool electro pop that imagines Depeche Mode and Underworld getting it together in some dark German nightclub. With BRIAN JONES, an ice cold female vocal rhymes Brian Jones and Rolling Stones over sultry beats and lush synth swells; intoxicating stuff. RECORD PLAYER rides along on a throbbing bass rumble and insistent beats; the vocals imbued with a certain rock tinged enthusiasm whilst the moody LE RENARD ARTIC is the point where Kraftwerk collide with Royskopp, voceodered up vocals rubbing shoulders with thumping beats and an eighties Miami Vice themed synth bath.
The title says it all really, DEATH PUNK DISCO is more a statement of intent here than a song name. Mixing up genres such as hip/hop, electro, punk and disco; Londoner Ichinchilla has produced a startling and infectious sounding noise, something akin to Marc Almond joining forces with Xtrmntr era Primal Scream at some dark underground electro club. ELECTRO PUNK DISCO is Ichinchilla's call to arms, his dry vocals sneering sleazily over electronic beats and ice cold samples, the sound of Kraftwerk updated and rebooted by LCD Soundsystem. The electro funk of THE BALL OF CONFUSION finds Ichinchilla delivering more in the way of cold electro action, this time round with more than a hint of a Depeche Mode or Soft Cell influence working its way into proceedings.
Hitting a more dry and considered stride on the pristine pop of ICE CREAM, Ichinchilla sounds like he's playing out all his new romantic eighties fantasies; his dry vocal delivery cascading over stark beats and swirling sound effects; all very Human League or Ultravox.
A startling and infectious sounding collection of songs, ZULU LANDING sees Ichinchilla mashing genres brilliantly to devastating effect here.
BIOGRAPHY
A marriage of digital and analogue, the infectious Record Player by Londoner and electronic wunderkind Ichinchilla marks both his and the debut of the Coney Island Discs label and will be hitting the shops on 27 March 2006. The first of a string of planned singles from this solo artist, Record Player takes a long hard look at the rule book before ripping it up and fusing the elements of electronica/hip-hop/reggae and rock n roll into a standalone hybrid. The track is released on silver vinyl 7", red 12" and enhanced CD. Resolutely original, Record Player dismisses verses, choruses and bridges and instead adopts a series of nagging refrains to bombard their way into the memory banks.
Rough Trade were won over: "A double slice of disco bass, sassy vocals and future synths make this a winner in every dept. A future anthem!".
Tank magazine were passionate about Ichinchilla's fusion of: Hip-Hop scratching, debonair vocals and British guitar Pop in equal measure, mixing them up to great effect. (they also included the track on their compilation!
Nude magazine described the track as: "Simple but very effective" and loved the "big glam/dance racket built atop of a punchy handclap rhythm."
Record Player is both an ode to and a reflection of the punk ethic and aesthetic.
Spiky and sparse in places, the track was honed in a bedroom studio in Chiswick with John Griffin, an engineer/producer found through NME. Ichinchilla turned up for the first session with a drum machine and tambourine and has since overseen every aspect of the recording, from writing, playing and singing lead and back up vocals to mastering the track. He also created the iconic artwork which has a deferential nod to New Order and, in truth, such care has been lavished on the packaging that when Record Player becomes a huge hit it could do to Coney Island Records what Blue Monday did to Factory!
Record Player has had an immediate effect upon all those who hear it and having placed the original white label 12" in the shops himself, Ichinchilla was courted by two major labels. Both offers were rejected in favour of staying independent for the time being and as we speak the track persists on being heard belting out of clubs across the capital.
