Knocking out the kind of mid paced piano ballads that have previously seen the likes of Keane go on to become household names, Go Cadenza are the latest band to emerge on the music scene with similar ideas.
If single ALL THE SAME is anything to go by though, Go Cadenza may need something a little extra if they intend to make an impression; this a plodding and ultimately dull sounding affair that leaves little more than mild indifference. Delivering a sound that lands somewhere slap bang between Robbie Williams and Keane, ALL THE SAME is awash with delicate piano chords and melodic vocals, but its just all a little too predictable and safe to really leave much of an impression. Flipside HOT AIR BALLOON is a slightly quirkier spin on things, this time round Go Cadenza approaching things from a more Steely Dan meets The Beautiful South place; more promising if still a touch middle of the road and ordinary.
Pleasant but ultimately dull sounding stuff from Go Cadenza, ALL THE SAME is a single that plays it far too safe to excite.
BIOGRAPHY
Guiseley Geezers GO CADENZA are fast making a name for themselves as a local band to watch; OK one lives in York and another, originally from down south, is at Leeds College of Music - so let’s not split hairs. If you thought that the Leeds suburb Guiseley’s contributions to England’s cultural heritage have been limited to Harry Ramsden’s fish and chips and Sooty. GO CADENZA are about to change your perceptions. A deal with London production company Bossy Music, a newly recorded album under their belts and their first EP which features Lost At Sea, Sunshine and Slumber and By The Look ready for release in May GO CADENZA adds to burgeoning list of Yorkshire bands and artists that are at the forefront of putting the excitement back into UK music.
Formed just a year ago and the current line-up just three months old GO CADENZA are: Paul Dale-Vickers (guitar, piano and lead vocals) from York , Guiseley lads Tim Richards (bass and vocals), Dave Moorhouse (guitars and vocals), Johnny Blower (percussion and guitar) and Ben Burnett (drums). Keyboardist Elliot Rodgers hails from the Home Counties. Comparisons with Keane, Coldplay and even Arcade Fire don’t really do them justice. They have an eclectic sound with co-songwriter Paul citing influences as diverse as The Beatles, Radiohead and Beck. Consummate musicianship and immaculate harmonies mean that their live performances are sublime catch them locally before the inevitable happens and the rest of the world catches on to the unique experience that is GO CADENZA.
The story actually began three years ago in London where Paul had been working and living. Three years ago Paul began writing the songs for the album with old mate Andrew Andreas. Andrew had a little studio set up and was part of a group of friends that included members of Zero 7 and Smoke City . Paul had been at University with Andrew’s then girlfriend. Stuck in London , Paul looked Andrew up and they went for a good night out. After a few drinks they got to talking about music. “We had a lot in common. I told Andrew that I wanted to write and perform so he asked me round to his flat in Muswell Hill.” Andrew says, “Paul brought me some ideas, lyrics and tunes and I had some tracks that I’d been working on. We put them together and it worked.
As soon as we started working we knew we where on to something special. We were into the same things, great tunes and lyrics that mean something. Paul’s lyrics are quirkier - mine are more about personal experiences; love gone bad that kind of stuff.” Many of the songs on the first album come from those initial collaborations including Sunshine and Slumber and Lost at Sea.
The debut album shows that the great tradition of eccentric English song writing is alive and well. Paul’s music has a hard edge with quirky lyrics and melodies. Andrew creates a softer, more organic folky music, with lots of strings and warm bass lines. Together their sounds fuse to create the mix of influences that is Go Cadenza; an emotional rollercoaster of eerie, atmospheric moments and big high-energy sounds that punctuate the sweet melodies.
Andrew is interested in the recording process, he loves nothing better than being in the studio writing and working on new ideas for the second album. Paul meanwhile moved back to Yorkshire and set about putting together the live band. Go Cadenza made their live debut at The Cockpit in Leeds last year to a packed house and a rapturous response and were soon invited back. They now have over thirty local gigs under their belts including shows at Dr Wu’s and Joseph’s Well which have started a word of mouth buzz in Leeds, which can only build with a slew of local appearances set for the next couple of months.
Appearances in London are planned for the end of May.
