The Hard Sell / Say Something / If I Wait Too Long / Year Of The Dog SELF RELEASED
Emerging from the ashes of their former band Bitchpups, Forgotten Sleep are a Welsh three piece bashing out infectious slices of grunge fuelled pop, their sound crash landing somewhere between Ash, Kyuss and Cheap Trick.
A harder edged experience than the one presented with Bitchpups, Forgotten Sleep deal more in heavy guitar riffs, pummelling drum attacks and angsty melodicism. Still at heart though an excitable pop trio, the songs that make up their debut self titled EP are all shot through with catchy choruses and infectious melodic hooks. Take opener THE HARD SELL with its singalong melodies and pop sized claws or the similarly boisterous YEAR OF THE DOG; the sublime IF I WAIT TOO LONG finds Matt Modgett crooning wistfully over subdued guitar shimmers, the middle ground between U2 and Mogwai, beautiful sounding stuff. SAY SOMETHING is a song that veers between sludge heavy guitar riffing and ethereal vocal glides, Hannah Modgett providing the sublime melodies with an other worldly grace, an effect that lies somewhere between Charlotte Hatherley and Joanna Newsom.
An EP that veers between boisterous power pop, driving sludge rock and sublime post-rock beauty, FORGOTTEN SLEEP announces the arrival of a band more than worthy of your love and attention.
BIOGRAPHY
MUSIC:
Forgotten Sleep take their memorable musical ideas on a screaming journey through grunge, metal, and '70s rock and punk - with surprise detours (and a little help from Bob Moog).
At times the songs are brutal and dark - they grab your heart, set it racing, and drop it down with a dirty great thud. Yet at times they're as catchy as pop, with melodies that remain long after the music has ended.
What you hear at first is an infectious melody carried by grunge guitars and thunderous drums - but Forgotten Sleep are out to deceive. The songs take a diversion which can be sweet or sour, ear=piercingly loud or soft and fragile. Hard-driving guitar riffs stack up against vocals that turn from screaming punk staccato to sweet and ethereal.
