Castle Keep / 327 / Waiting For An Accident / Asleep In Your Attic
ANGRY LIBERAL RECORDS
A split single showing off the soft and tender side of emo, CASTLE KEEP / WAITING FOR AN ACCIDENT is a warm and inviting affair that puts a more intriguing spin of the whole tired singer/songwriter scene.
First up, Openmouth is the solo project of Miss Black America vocalist Seymour Patrick, here stripped of the usual blistering distortion and and left with just a guitar and voice. With pretty melodicism and an ear for the melancholy, CASTLE KEEP is a mesmerising song that sees Patrick delivering delicate guitar lines and darkly beautiful melodies, think Fugazi by way of Joseph Arthur for an easy reference point.
South London singer/songwriter Dexy gives a more overtly pop tone to proceedings with the upbeat WAITING FOR AN ACCIDENT, pitching his sounding somewhere between the Kinks, Pulp and Bob Dylan whilst the harmonica infused ASLEEP IN YOUR ATTIC is a more subdued affair, a tender slice of melancholy more attuned to Elliott Smith.
BIOGRAPHY
Angry Liberal Records and legendary fanzine-cum-label R*E*P*E*A*T have joined forces to release the joint debut EP by two of London's most promising new singer/songwriters: Dexy and Open Mouth.
Open Mouth
Open Mouth is the solo project of Miss Black America singer Seymour Patrick, born in late 2005 when line-up troubles in MBA found Seymour unexpectedly alone in a recording studio with producer Andy Taylor (Editors, Carina Round).
Seymour plans to make and release two Open Mouth albums by the end of 2007. The first single is a split 7" with Dexy (featuring CASTLE KEEP and 327 by Open Mouth and Dexy's own WAITING FOR AN ACCIDENT and ASLEEP IN YOUR ATTIC), due out through Angry Liberal Records/R*E*P*E*A*T. Open Mouth and Dexy will be touring the UK to accompany the release.
Dexy
South London-based Dexy has been peddling his brand of twisted alt-pop songs for just over a year, ending up onstage on his own out of a restless need to create and perform. The nearest he had to a strategy was to throw himself into as many bills that were otherwise made up of full live bands and avoid where possible the tranquility of the open mic night or acoustic bills. It set the challenge to prove that it wasn't about how loud your amps were or hiding behind a posture but being able to affect the audience with only a guitar and a voice.
Songs like A PUNCTURE, SHRUG TO THE FLOOR and the debut single WAITING FOR AN ACCIDENT tie instant melodies to lyrics that are both bitter and loving, broken and joyous. He is still to play a full UK tour, yet in 2006 alone he played 41 solo shows, the highlight of which came in June when he was asked to be the penultimate act at this years Bournemouth Live Festival - second only to Bob Dylan. He also supported The Spinto Band in London, who all requested copies of Dexy's 3 track CD. On top of that A PUNCTURE has just been name in Earwax Radio's Top Tracks of 2006 and Dexy featured in Time Out magazine (03-10/01) as One To Watch for 2007. The current issue of Artrocker magazine describes Dexy's music as "achingly heartfelt...quite simply beautiful"
