DAVID GIBB - 1999

" Its hard to get very excited or enthused by the 1999 EP, a record that settles for nice and pleasant instead of aiming for anything more. "

DAVID GIBB - 1999
1999 / Dreams Are For Curtains / Your Soul Smells Nice / The Funeral Planner
SELF RELEASED

David Gibb is another of those sensitive singer/songwriter types, wielding an acoustic guitar and making music that brings to mind words like nice and pleasant. Its all very Richard Ashcroft/Jose Gonzalez/Damien Rice/David Gray, a quartet of songs that offer up soothing melodies and laid back vibes, nothing groundbreaking or fresh - you know, just nice.
Without anything that really sets him apart from the crowd, David Gibb doesn't manage to hugely impress here; he's got a decent enough voice in a Mark Morris meets Tim Burgess kind of way, a warm guitar tone, nice enough sounding songs - but its all just a bit average and underwhelming. Of the songs here, 1999 is a tender indie pop ballad rich with storytelling lyricism, DREAMS ARE FOR CURTAINS and YOUR SOUL SMELLS NICE, decent sounding stripped back pop tunes that wash over you without causing any offence.
David Gibb presents himself here as a bit too average and middle of the road, these are decent songs sung by a decent sounding singer, nothing more or nothing less. Its hard to get very excited or enthused by the 1999 EP, a record that settles for nice and pleasant instead of aiming for anything more.
