Bashing out sinewy post-hardcore bliss ala Fugazi and The Blood Brothers, Charlottefield are a Brighton 4-piece all about the throaty vocal mannerisms and deliciously complex guitar and drum interplay.
Songs like BEATINGS and LATE REPEAT from their WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR release suggest that they know their musical history well enough, their sound referencing everything from Fugazi and At The Drive-In through to the more desolate sounds of Karate and even in their more tender moments, Low.
WRONG ON PURPOSE is a more direct hit, a short sharp shock of dissonant guitar stabs, lyranxing vocal gymnastics and scattershot drum patterns whilst on the looser sounding SNAKES, the band hint at more diverse and intriguing musical directions, moving towards post-hardcore jazz ruminations not unlike Battles or even Tortoise. The more subdued BROKEN BELL is a tenderly restraint lesson in tension and release, taut and muscular yet tender and almost heartbroken in places.
WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR suggests Charlottefield as a band capable of extremely impressive things, the band's reference points and influences may be obvious but the end results are glorious enough to more than compensate.
BIOGRAPHY
A young 4-piece band we chanced upon playing in Brighton in summer 2001, Charlottefield's debut release came with a single, 'Picture Diary', in our 7" series, which was released in August 2002.
The sound on this release sits somewhere between Televison, Throwing Muses, Ride, early Hood and Fugazi, though a list does little to explain their working these influences into something of their own.
The band have since gone on to record tracks for Unlabel and Jonson Family, and have toured with Cat On Form and The Phil Collins 3, as well as being involved in a number of FatCat events.
Since the FatCat 7", and a large number of live shows, the band's sound has changed to become harder edged and increasingly direct.
