Sounding like a headfirst collision between Editors and Duran Duran, five piece indie rockers Broken Dolls are a band hammering out wired electro indie rock ala The Killers, The Bravery and Kasabian.
As with those bands, Broken Dolls also know the power a massive hook laden chorus and swathes of synthesisers can do you; debut album BROKEN DOLLS, a record chock full of both in glorious abundance.
Opener here, HERE WE GO is a throbbing slice of low slung indie rock; all windsweept guitar shapes, pounding drum patterns and passionate vocal croons. The angular ROCK AND ROLL sounds like Franz Ferdinand going at it with Oasis, stadium threatening stuff that lives up to its title whilst the loose limbed bass rumbling pop of CRAZY SCENE finds Broken Dolls blending baggy beats with huge choruses and the odd moment of rock out abandon.
Previous single STRONGER sees Broken Dolls frontman Neil delivering passionate vocals in gloriously windswept fashion as the rest of the band go about unleashing all the throbbing basslines, crashing powerchords and driving drum patterns you could ever wish for.
Sure, this may be a somewhat over familiar formula by now, but Broken Dolls inject things with such an air of the grandiose and epic that you can put any cynicism aside. STRONGER is an impressively epic sounding call to arms from Broken Dolls. The epic indie rock of COMING OUT feels like a massive hit in the waiting, infectious vocals rubbing shoulders with insistent grooves and snarling guitar swirls; Broken Dolls delivering a sound that crashes slap bang between Oasis, Kasabian and The Stone Roses.
The tear stained WHAT THE HELL shows off the bands more tender side whilst PEACHES injects some eighties electro pop influences into the mix. WIth SOMETHING TO SAY, The Broken Dolls unleash brash indie rock guitar pop complete with shuddering power riffs and towering choruses whilst the piano led balladeering of ONE OF THESE DAYS reveals their Beatles infatuations with epic, if predictable results.
As debut albums go, BROKEN DOLLS is an impressive affair; a collection of epic indie anthems in the waiting. The influences and reference points may be glaringly obvious at times with The Broken Dolls, but as starting points, this is a debut record that deserves your immediate attention.
