Still sounding
as sublime and smooth as ever, LATELY, one
of the standout tracks from their double LP CALDO-FREDDO
is here given the extensive remix treatment. Coming from production
duo Airbiscuit, LATELY, is a slick slice
of jazzy deep-house that gives you that sunset at Ibiza tingle,
the sensuous female vocals providing depth to the laid back
beats and ambient soundwashes.
Coffee table pop in the same way that Groove Armada or Faithless
are, this is music that won't change your life or make even
a mild dent in it - but it is music that does smooth jazz
infused dance extremely well and as such looks set for big
things.
Of the remixes, the Riley & Durrant Mix adds a healthy
dose of trance to proceedings mutating the song into a Balaeric
dance anthem, while Mutiny's Lads & Ladies Mix drops in
a dirty bass groove and deep house elements that again transform
the track into something of an epic dance anthem.
Pick of the bunch though is The Struggle Dub a mix that twists
and turns the original into something almost unrecognisable
at times, taking fresh new directions and funky detours that
are linked only by the soulful vocal refrain.
Airbiscuit look likely to build on their success since the
debut album in
2003 and you can easily see LATELY raising
their profile to that next level.
The addition of dancefloor filling mixes here cements their
position as a formidable dance act, and its not hard to see
Airbiscuit achieving the same level of success as someone
like Groove Armada in the very near future.
Airbiscuit is the brainchild of quirky production duo BooBoo
Johnson and Phillip Stone. Originally from Cambridge, Airbiscuit
were founded in 2001 with a simple mission - to create quality
dance music with widespread appeal, irrespective of genre.
BooBoo Johnson began his musical career drumming with numerous
rock bands across the country, before a chance visit to seminal
London nightspot Turnmills changed his musical vision for
good. Phillip Stone, a succesful guitarist and vocalist, has
worked as a sound engineer and producer before turning his
hand to dance music production in the late 90s. The pair spent
much of last year writing and producing their debut LP Caldo/Freddo,
from which comes their already acclaimed single Lately. At
the Miami Winter Music Conference, Airbiscuit experienced
a phenomenal response to lead album tracks. Lately and Sublime,
the former being a firm favourite with more discerning Balearic
club DJs. DJ support has come from the likes of DJ Pathaan,
Stoned Asia and Lenny Ibizarre.
By the close of 2003, the band had earned a coveted place
on M8 magazines and Hard To Find Records Unsigned Artists
CD, being dubbed by HTFR as One of the strongest tracks on
the album... In 2004, Lately has already picked up support
from key UK media with playlisting so far on (among others)
Capital (with play on the Ali B show), Galaxy, AOL, Passion
FM, Takeover Radio and Olympic, plus spot plays across dozens
of regional stations. February saw the media campaign gather
pace with the single being featured in Hit Sheet and Record
Of The Day, while the first public airing of the Lately video
went out on national TV in February, when BBCs award winning
Working Lunch programme visited Zenith Cafe. The video has
been playlisted by MTV and Home Choice/Video networks, as
well as being shown in Top Shop and H&M Hennes stores,
while the Daily Telegraphs Neil McCormick dubbed the single,
chill out heaven.
The buzz surrounding LATELY has been intense. Following last
years number 8 in the upfront club charts with SUBLIME, Airbicuit
return with a storming new release. The sexy original track
is complimented by club, dub, breaks and a fantastic new mix
by rising-star trance producers Riley & Durrant.
With initial reactions across the board from an eclectic group
of Djs including thumbs up from Pete Tong, Paul Van Dyke,
Seb Fontaine, Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Tom Stephan,
Daniele Davoli, Lenny Ibizarre, Graeme Park, Dino Lenny, Don
Diablo, Dj Evolve, Mr Groove & Vergas, Nico De Ceglia,
Big Al and Ali B amongst others, the single looks set to take
off in a big way with the full club mail-out starting in April
and a much anticipated Lads & Ladies mix by Mutiny to
top it all off...
The chilled, sultry groove of LATELY has already earned the
Extended Mix a place as the only chill out track on the DMC
DJ Only collection for March.
Shortly to be played in fashion stores across Europe as one
of 5 tracks on Cortefiel/Springfield promo CD, it is also
being played in bars and high street shops throughout the
UK via TSG Media, edited onto a forthcoming BBC2 programme
and selected use on Hollyoaks...
Already picking up plays on Kiss 100FM, across the Galaxy
network, Ministry Of Sound/GWR network show, Vibe FM, Key
103FM, Juice FM and Ministry Of Sound radio amongst many others,
the full national and ILR campaign gets underway in May.
With Airbiscuit's double album CALDO-FREDDO appearing at 25
in M8 Magazine's Top 50 Albums of 2004 and jazz-influenced
WONDEROUS included on the new Eidos game, Hitman: Blood Money,
2005 could well belong to Airbiscuit.
