So it's here at last, the third single to be lifted from the hugely successful Marshall Mathers LP, after the number one hit of "The Real Slim Shady", and other single "The Way I Am".
Eminem's had quite a year, with the threat of prison and legal battles ahead and the usual attacks from the tabloid press - ("stop this evil menace from corrupting our kids") - and the usual rubbish. He's also managed to release one of the best hip-hop albums in recent years.
Stan seems to have been played relentlessly on the radio since early in the year and surprisingly seems to get better each time you hear it. For those of you who haven't heard it, although that is pretty unlikely, Stan is Eminem's take on the whole celebrity stalker culture culminating in a violent and shocking ending.
With Eminem's distinctive vocal's getting increasingly manic throughout and the hauntingly beautiful back sample from British artists Dido's "I Thank You", (which looks like becoming a hit in its own right), Stan is a stunning single. Second track, "Get You Mad" is pretty average on first appearances, but as with most of hie songs Eminem soon draws you into his world view with his warped lyrics.
As a Bonus on the CD single you get the brilliant, "My Name Is" and also the directors cut of the Stan Video, which is worth buying the single alone for.Stan is a great song, standing head and shoulders above the competition at the moment, please make it number one this year,lets not have another Christmas with the likes of the insipid cack of Westlife or cynical cash in of Bob the Builder at the top of the charts.
